The speculation surrounding this year's gaming ceremony reached a fever pitch, especially after presenter Geoff Keighley shared a puzzling photo of a desert monolith. The secret is finally answered. Larian Studios is creating a brand-new Divinity game.
Announced as Divinity, the game was presented with a bold trailer packed with striking imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to scenes of revelry and the literal unleashing of hell.
A Different Direction
For those hoping for Divinity Original Sin 3, prepare for a surprise. The studio stated ahead of time that a follow-up to its beloved RPGs is not on the cards right now.
That said, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a evolution of the main series. This distinction implies that the team is likely building a real-time experience as opposed to another tactical title. For now, it remains theory, as only a teaser video is available.
A Pillar of Modern RPGs
The Divinity series is widely praised and many say it kicked off the recent resurgence of complex computer role-playing games. These games are defined by rich lore, player agency, and deep class systems—qualities that recently reached new heights in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its setting is familiar fare, what truly sets Divinity apart is the remarkable agency granted to the player.
Where many modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is packed with unique possibilities that are viable with a particular class or origin with a personal story.
The series is also famously open-ended, letting players to improvise both in story and combat. Most missions can be completed in diverse methods, often in unexpected fashion.
- You might solve a puzzle because you recalled something a dog told you.
- Or, you could bypass a challenge by using the world itself in a inventive way.
More to Come
It is precisely these elements that have cemented the series to declare games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as a top-tier role-playing games in history. Now, the RPG community can anticipate more where that came from in this legendary franchise.
